Description

This secretary's journal holds the minutes for the Midway Grange organization starting in 1883 with bulk dates to 1886. Some looses heets date to 1890, but the book itself dates mostly from 1883 to 1886. Loose sheets include information about dues, membership, etc. Nicolas A. "Abe" Swann was the organization's secretary for the majority of its meetings.

Midway Grange No. 1351 Midway, Hunt Co., Texas Oct. 6th, 1883 The first meeting of this Grange af- ter organization was held on Saturday in the fourth degree. Bro. Jonathan Guice of Ray's Creek acting Worthy Master Pro. Tem. Bro. Jno Woods of the same order acting. W.S. On ex- amination by the A.S. and L.A.S all were found correct, and every thing then pronounced in ample order. Mrs. Callie Shipp was then iniatated as a Charter member in the four degree. Motion to meet on the 1st Saturday in each month at 2 o'clock P.M., also on the 3rd Saturday in each month at 7 o'clock P.M. adopted. The bus- iness of the day being concluded the meeting adjourned to meet again Sat- urday Oct. 20th.

Midway Grange No. 1351. Nov. 3rd, 1883 Grange opened today with a small attendance. Several officers not present and the following members elect- ed in their stead. Geo. Lane, W.O. J.W. Lane, Steward. Mrs. N.C. Swann, Chaplain, Mrs. S.F. Lane, Flora. No lecturer nor treas. elected as there were not enough members present to fill all the offices. The minutes of last meeting were read and adopted. Mr. Hade Girdner ap- plied for membership by [demit] and was unanimously admitted into the Grange. It was suggested for the good of the order that all be punctual in attendance. Reading of minutes next in order. The business of the day being declared over, the Grange was formally closed to meet Saturday, Nov. 17th, 1883.

Midway Grange, No. 1351. Nov. 17th, 1883 Midway, Hunt Co., Tex. Grange opended today according to previous appointment. All present ex- amined and found correct. Our W.S. being absent. G.F. Lane was duly appointed in his stead for the day. Mrs. S.F. Lane apponted Ceres, and Mrs. Callie Shipp appointed Pamona. A committee of Messrs. W.F. Lane, A.J. Wommack, and D.E. Shipp. The minutes oflast meeting read. Messrs S.L. Shipp, W.O. Dunbar and G.F. Lane appointed as a standing committee. Standing committee in- structed to obtain material for fur- nishing house with curtains and desk. Committee composed of D.E. Shipp, A.J. Wommack and N.A. Swann appointed to construct bylaws for this Grange. The meeting thne adjourned in due order to meet again Saturday, Dec. 1st, 1883. Done by N.A. Swann Secretary Signed W.M.

Midway Grange No. 1351 Dec. 1st, 1883 Grange convened today according to appointment. Mrs. N.C. Swann appointed L.A.S. Pro. Tem. All examined and found correct except two. Grange then open in the first degree for the purpose of iniating candidates. Ballot taken to see if M.D.P. Morris be admitted for initiation in two degrees. Carried unan- imously. First two degrees then con- fered. Two degrees confered on Mrs. M.E.A. Green as a charter member, and owing to a lack of time, the initiation in the other degrees was postponed till next meeting. Minutes of last meeting read and adopted. The committee on candidates reported favorably on Mr. Abbott's application for mem- bership. The committee on bylaws asked for and was granted further time, $2.05 two dol- lars and 5 cts due S.L. Shipp for curtains and fixtures. Paid out of Treas. acct. against Grange for express package. Paid. Standing committee instructed to procure a trunk for holding tools

and utensils belonging to the Grange. Balloting to ascertain whether Mr. Abbott will be admitted membership in the order. Vote unanimous. Our worth Ch. W.F. Midway Grange No. 1351 Jan. 5th, 1884 The usual formality of opening the Grange was dispensed with today , as the weather was very cold and but few members present. Work begun by reading minutes of last meeting which were approved. This being the time for the elction and installation of officers, that business was next attended to with the following results. M. Swann, W.M., D.E. Shipp, W.C., A.J. Wommack, W.L., W.C. Dunbar, Steward, W.M. Lane, A.S. W.F. Lane, Chp., L.T. Shipp, Treas., N.A. Swann Sec., Geo. F. Lane, gatekeeper. Lady officers Mrs. A.M. Dunbar, Ceres, Mrs. A.J. Wommack, Flora. Mrs. M.E. Shipp, Pamona, Mrs. Emma Girdner, L.A.S. The following were not present and have not yet been installed. A.J. Wommack, Mrs. A.M. Dunbar, Mrs. A.J. Midway Grange No.1351 Feb. 2nd, 1884 Graange convened today with the W.O. acting W.M. Pro. Tem. S.F. Shipp appointed W.O. Pro. Tem. N.A. Swann appointed A.S. Pro. Tem. and Mrs. N.C. Swann L.A.S. Pro. Tem. All present found correct on examination and Grange pronounced open in ample order. On motion it was decided to make it a law of the grange rejecting a candidate if he failed, for two successive meetings after his ap- plication, to make his appearance for admission and his money refunded. Provided he can not give a legal excuse. Our W. Ch. appointed to inform Mr. Abbott of this decision. On motion our Worth Ch. was added to the committee appointed to construct bylaws for the Grange. On motion it was decided to ac- cept a trunk bought for the use of the Grange. A balance of 80 cents due S.F. Shipp for trunk. Minutes of last meeting were called for, read, and approved. Midway Grange No.1351 March 1st, 1884 Grange opened today in the usual form and all found in order. On motion it was decided that a clause in a former minute referring to the balloting for Mr. Abbott was null and void. Suggestions for the good of the order were given by our Worthy Chp. and by the Worthy M. and among other things said that the success of the members, at least, much more could be accomplished by all metting promp- tly and acting together than by some staying away and waiting for the rest to act. No one could ex- pect to profit much by the order without taking an interest in it. But few members present, and but little business on hand, and the meeting them closed in due form. N.A. Swann, Sec.
